Grant Hayao (Veteran) ICHIKAWA (NEW)

Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington County,
Virginia

Grant
FIRST LIEUTENANT US Army
1919 - 2017

Mildred
1918 - 2010

(Note: I read Mildred’s obituary and discovered that she, too, is a veteran, although not mentioned here on the marker. After reading further, I learned that Japanese American women who served in the U.S. military during World War II, including those with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, like Mildred, are considered veterans in the traditional sense. Their service, often in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) or the Army Nurse Corps, involved the same recognition and benefits as other veterans, regardless of their deployment locations. The first group of Japanese American women deployed to occupied Japan, which included Mildred) served in various capacities, including medical, administrative, and support roles. Their status as veterans is affirmed by their honorable service in the U.S. military during the war, contributing to the overall mission and post-war efforts. They would be eligible for the same veteran benefits and honors as other military personnel who served during the same period. Perhaps it would be prudent to recognize her as a veteran as well? ✌️)
