Her residence, Henry House, became the focal point of the First Battle of Bull Run. At age 85, she refused to vacate the building when Confederate soldiers occupied it, and was killed by Union gunfire, becoming the first civilian killed in Civil War combat. She is buried on Henry House Hill, near where her home once stood.
