Henrietta was born in Yatesville, Lunenburg County, Virginia. She was the daughter of James and Sarah Yates. Her husband, Adolphus James Holmes, Sr. was an emigre from England most likely post US Civil War, and died in a train accident in Virginia. While the date of his death is not known, in family oral history, he died while his son Adolphus Jr. was a boy. Assuming this was around 10 years old, the date of death should be in the decade of the 1880s. Adolphus Jr. was born in 1877. The date of death could be within five years of 1885. Henrietta had a daughter, Virginia Henrietta, born in 1870. After their mother's death both Virginia and Adolphus, Jr. moved to Philadelphia and lived there about a decade.
