James Rice Holt sixth child of Col John White Holt Sr. and Eliza Leftwich Holt. Married Elizabeth "Bettie" Scruggs 1851, they had five children. He attended Emory & Henry college for two years 1847/8. On April 28, 1861, he is listed in Company A of the 24th Virginia during the civil war, no rank listed. James owed and ran the National Hotel in Norfolk VA with his brother Joseph Holt from Jul 1872 until sometime in 1875/6. It was later renamed the Purcell House. He helped run the Yellow Sulphur Springs resort for his son Ridgway Holt later in life.
